The University Clinic for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (MKG) or its predecessors already existed before the establishment of university medicine in Magdeburg in 1954.

Precursors were::

1931/32

The installation of a dental treatment room in the Medical Clinic of Sudenburg Hospital;;
Later relocated to the pharmacy building with expansion; staffed by part-time municipal school dentists.

1933/36

Employment of two full-time hospital dentists (from 1936 Dr. Meyer).

1939

Establishment of a "Dental and Maxillofacial Clinic" (Director Dr. Post) as a control center for the dental care of the Sudenburg, Altstädt and Lostau Hospitals.

1945/49

Reorganization of the clinic at Sudenburg Hospital (from 1948 Gustav-Ricker Hospital), which had been closed down due to the war.
Appointment of Dr. Meyer as chief physician

1950/58

Gradual expansion of the clinic in terms of personnel, structure and equipment (e.g. affiliation of a dental laboratory and an X-ray facility) as well as planning work for a new building

1958

Relocation to the new clinic building (house 19) with polyclinic and inpatient ward, consisting among others of 7 dental treatment facilities and 29 beds

1972

The management of the clinic was taken over by senior medical officer Prof. Dr. Dr. Raimund Petz until 1993.

1994

As successor to Prof. Dr. Dr. R. Petz, who retired in November 1993, Prof. Dr. Dr. K. L. Gerlach
Prof. Dr. Dr. K. L. Gerlach followed in February 1994 the call to the
chair of oral and maxillofacial surgery at the Otto-von-Guericke-
University of Magdeburg
