The name of the clinic changed in accordance with professional and health policy requirements from Dental Ward to Dental and Maxillofacial Clinic, Clinic for Dental, Oral and Maxillofacial Diseases, Clinic and Polyclinic for Stomatology to the present University Clinic for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Initially, its mission was to provide dental treatment for hospital patients, but later it was to assume responsibility for maxillofacial surgery as the only inpatient facility in the Magdeburg district, with functions in patient care, continuing education and training, dental care for the staff of the Medical Academy and in the university education of medical students, as well as clinical research, including academic degrees.

With the foundation of the Otto von Guericke University in 1993, the directorate of the clinic was combined with teaching. It has been modernized and equipped considerably in recent years and is one of the two university clinics for maxillofacial surgery in the state of Saxony-Anhalt.
